It is almost the end of winter in merry Australia, and as climate change is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, we must do our part. And that begins with the right kind of clothing. Yes, it might seem a little awkward at first, but the disposal of clothing items in landfills constitutes a large percentage of land pollution. “But why?” you must be thinking; it is because the lesser people pay for their clothing, the lesser the clothes sustain. Result? We end up buying new items. So, on that note, let us see how we can be both comfortable and reduce landfill pollution by choosing the right fabrics for our kids clothing in Australia during this summer.
Table of Contents
Cotton
This first fabric seems like an obvious choice for most since cotton is one of the most readily available fabrics in the world. So, why cotton? Well, because it is extremely breathable of a fabric. Since most of you are reading this might know, Australia tends to get extremely hot and humid during the summer. And although we adults can keep up with the heat, the little ones cannot. So since they are always looking for an excuse to play, even in Aussie heat, cotton is one of the best choices for fabrics this summer. It is cheap, easy to work with, lightweight, soft on the skin, and allows for the passage of heat and sweat. So, kids cotton clothing is ideal for jumping, running, dancing, and all other activities that kids get the energy to do during the summer.
Chambray
Here it comes, one of the kids’ favourites! Denim! *Winks* Well, no. Chambray, as many of you may be aware, is a lighter alternative to denim. Denim is a heavy cotton fabric that is like the best friend for kids. But we must be mindful of the fabrics they wear. Although denim is cotton and is breathable, it is very heavy, making it a very difficult fabric to manage. So, the alternative is chambray. Since it has a higher thread count than cotton and has a finer weave, it is very breathable and makes for a great denim replacement. It is basically denim, without the weight. But shush, don’t say this to your kids!
Linen
We know you have been wondering where this jewel of fabric had been. Well, here it is, linen. We all have very strong feelings about this fabric, don’t we? It is flowy, lightweight, EXTREMELY breathable, and also the favourite of our ancestors. Linen is one of the oldest fabrics to exist, which is why it is so revered. Linen is honestly the fabric that can fit anywhere and everywhere. So, whether it is for your kids’ afternoon karaoke parties during the summer afternoons (Ugh) or for their school evening cycling rounds, linen is where the party is at. It is an entirely natural fabric, which makes it highly sustainable (remember that rant about landfill pollution?) and gives it the coolness your kids deserve. Because let’s be honest, it is a lot less worrisome for us to see our kids playing in something comfortable than it a polyester blend jacket.
Rayon
Alright, now it is time to get into the synthetics. Yes, despite the earlier talk about choosing natural fibre materials during summer and all, rayon is an exception. Rayon is not an entirely synthetic fabric but a synthetic blend made from cotton, pulp and, of course, some synthetic materials. So, why? Why rayon? Well, it is because of its functionality. Yes, a blended fabric would have less breathability, but at the same time, rayon is an extremely thin fabric. It is often used as a replacement for silks (So, you can imagine). Due to its weight and coolness, rayon is an ideal fabric for your kids’ football (or Soccer) jerseys. Moreover, rayon is also great for making summer dresses, so you can buy your kids those rayon dresses and shirts now, because you know they would not be uncomfortable for them to wear, even during Aussie summers.
So, there you have it, a list of the most breathable fabrics for your kids’ summers. We understand your concerns about picking out a breathable fabric since it is very easy to just throw a polyester shirt out and replace it with a cotton shirt. The problem arises with the over the disposal of such items of clothing. So, make your clothing decisions wisely and cheers to an amazing summer to come!
