Easter Egg Hunt in DC’s Stargirl

Easter Egg

Quick warning: this article contains a lot of spoilers for the CW show Stargirl. Like many other comic-to-television adaptations, Easter eggs abound. The first season of Stargirl is no exception to this. Since Stargirl has a long history of crossover appearances, this should come as no surprise. Can you spot them all?

The most important Easter egg in Stargirl is a sad one. Stargirl’s alter ego Courtney is based on Geoff John’s real-life sister, who tragically passed in a plane crash when she was 18. The Stargirl character is an homage to his sister. There are several references to Courtney Johns in the first episode of the series, including photos of her and Stargirl, while Courtney Whitmore, played by Brec Bassinger, is packing to leave for Nebraska.

Strange Coincidences

When the family first reaches Nebraska, Courtney is wearing the same shirt as Pat does later on in the episode. This is not the only odd coincidence. There is a classic star pattern that appears in the sky while Courtney stares wistfully out the window. The pattern is Virgo, which is representative of the Young Maiden of Justice.

Pat Dugan, played by Luke Wilson, also known as Stripesy, is always wearing some form of stripes. This striped clothing ranges from shirts to jackets, ties, and pants. Throughout the first season, Pay is always wearing stripes somewhere.

Another wardrobe egg is that Courtney Whitmore is always wearing something blue, referencing her Stargirl persona. She wears blue hoodies, blue scarves, blue pants, and blue shirts. Sometimes she is even wearing red, white, and blue clothing.

In one episode, the movie theater posters do not actually depict movies. They are covers of three classic comics. These comics are from the 1960s and 1970s. This popular trio is the Prez, G.I. Robot and the Unknown Soldier. The classic covers are difficult to catch as Brainwave Jr. is the main focal point of the scene. The very same theater has a marquee that references the Strange Adventure Series.

Repeat Appearances

Stargirl’s first appearance is not actually in the Stargirl series. She appears in different forms throughout DC’s other shows. In the show Arrow, it is established that she is from a parallel universe. The legends meet an older version of her in Legends of Tomorrow. Jay Garrick appears in the Flash, and his mangled helmet is found later in the Stargirl series. It is not just modern shows that have repeat appearances. Courtney Whitmore appeared in the comic Stars and STRIPE #0 in July 1999 as a side character.

Stargirl is not the only character with repeat appearances. Some of the more popular villains have also appeared elsewhere, although you have to look closely to spot them.

Past Characters

Stargirl contains an unusual amount of past DC characters and character icons. This includes heroes as well as villains. There is an obvious reference to the heroes of the past in the show’s pilot. The beginning of the pilot contains comic greats like Wildcat, Dr. Mid-Nite, Hourman, and Starman in the first five minutes of the first episode. You will also find objects from the past like the lantern from the Green Lantern.

In the first Stargirl episode, Courtney finds a newspaper that references Dr. Weerd. Later in the series, you can find references to the Fiddler, the Gambler, and quite a few others. If you pay close attention, you might even find references to towns like Keystone from the Flash.

This list does not contain all of the Stargirl Easter eggs out there. There are more as DC continues the tradition of putting a little something extra for their fans in their shows. It is up to you to find them all. Like many comic to television conversions, there are hundreds of Easter eggs out there.
