Beach Safety Tips For Parents With Small Children

Small Children

Summer beach holidays can be very relaxing for the whole family. However, parents of especially young shouldn’t let their guard down. There are always subtle dangers in nature that can harm children. As summer approaches and the days are getting warmer, families heading out to their local beaches should pay attention to some basic safety tips:

Beach Safety Tips For Parents With Small Children

Talk To Children- the day before your beach trip, it is important to talk to children about the possible dangers. Tell them about the rules of water safety and things they can’t do while playing on the beach. It is much easier to watch over your small children if they already know basic rules and follow those. For many families, their small children have already learned some safety basics such as listening and following directions at their day care centre.

Choose A Calm Beach- a crowded surfer’s beach shouldn’t be your first choice. Beaches in a bay usually have very small waves and it’s much safer for your children to play in the water. Check the latest weather forecast to learn about the temperature, precipitation, wind speed, and wave height in the area. If it’s sunny and the wind speed is mild, it can be a perfect day for a beach excursion.

Obey Safety Flags- certain parts of the beach may have bigger waves and stronger currents that can harm swimmers and small children. Always remain between the two green flags, because it’s a safe place for children to play near the water’s edge. Always accompany older children near yellow flags because caution is advised when there’s light surf. Never venture into areas with red flags.

Watch For Beach Creatures- children are curious. They love to collect sea-shells and chase after tiny crabs. But it can be dangerous if there is jellyfish floating nearby or washed up on shore. Portuguese man-o-war resembles blue jellies and children may try to pick them up. It has venomous long tentacles that can cause excruciating pain and unconsciousness.

Protect From The Sun- prolonged exposure to the sun can be harmful, especially for younger children. Apply a safe sunscreen product on your children every 30 minutes or after they play in the water. If it’s bright and sunny, it’s important to bring a beach umbrella or find shade for the whole family. Bring enough water to keep everyone hydrated.
