In Autism, educational and psychological assessments are required for many students who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. The assessment process is essential to determine which students perform within their peer group and which students may need more help. Specialists are also trained to help with these tests and to recommend the best course of action for each student. There are many areas included in the WPS educational and psychological assessments, including speech and language, social, receptive language, receptive auditory memory, visual processing, and mathematics.
Speech and Language
Speech and language are the first assessment area that school psychologists and educational specialists conduct. This is because it is the only proper way to determine communication skills. Students with Autism usually have minimal ability to communicate. Still, a school psychologist and an APS psychologist can use a series of tests and methods to determine what exactly is being expressed by an individual. Most school psychologists and educational specialists use a survey type of assessment to determine what level of social skill and preference each individual has. This is typically combined with a behavioral method used to decide how the child or adult in question fits into the overall educational plan.
Receptive Language and Memory Assessments
Receptive language and memory assessments are used to determine academic and behavioral difficulties. Students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder usually have a problem with this particular assessment. Still, with the help of a school psychologist and APS psychologists, they can be taught to understand and comprehend this type of testing. The primary purpose of the sensory examination is to discover any functional deficits in the brain’s sensory processes.
Functional deficits can be detected in the processing of information, memory, or language. Children with these disorders can benefit from an educational and psychological assessment. Still, the results will not necessarily show a negative rating unless the clinical evaluation results in the child being diagnosed with a specific mental disorder.
Some individuals may appear to be perfect in every area of their life. Still, these same people may have more severe behavior issues. For schools to help their students reach their full potential, educational and psychological assessments are administered regularly. Students can be tested on their reasoning, expression, creativity, athletic, self-confidence, socialization, and memory skills. These tests can also reveal any problems with one or more daily living areas, such as sleeping, eating, working, and interacting with others. Other assessments can gauge a child’s academic performance in mathematics, reading, and science.
Psychological assessments are often used in school-wide screenings for students and teachers. Parents can also take these assessments to ensure that their child is receiving proper support and assistance. School psychologists and school nurses to administer the tests and write reports about the findings of the assessments. Psychological assessments can help identify classrooms’ problems and lead to improved learning and behavioral strategies that can ultimately increase a child’s educational success.
